Replace Floor Grating: Retrofit Bar Grating Deck or Mezzanine Plank Grating

The perforated steel grid surface of bar grating is designed to enhance traction and reduce slipping. However, this metal grate surface generates vibration as the dollies or carts travel over it, requiring workers to apply additional force to maintain control as they push or pull a wheel-based load. It also makes maneuvering pallet jack loads difficult and creates excessive noise.

While your mezzanine helps increase floor space, bar grating presents many hazards:

• Gaps in grate flooring present a trip hazard
• Gaps also allow small items to fall through to level below
• Bar grate openings prevent installation and use of workstations
• Texture and openings in grating prohibit use of robotic fleets

Further, bar grate deck and plank grate flooring materials are rigid and unforgiving, making them less ergonomic and increasing employee fatigue. During biomechanical testing, employees walking over bar or plank grate flooring experienced a more than 10% increase in tibial shock force. This translates into the equivalent of adding 18 pounds to body mass, which can raise the risk of injury.
